Attaragoda is a stunning mangrove wetland located just 3km outside of Galle on the Southern Coast.
This lush patch of mangrove forest is an exceptional location, boasting a diverse range of mangrove species that are distributed in relation to salinity levels.
Additionally, the wetland is home to a rich avifauna population, making it a prime location for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
In terms of avifauna, we conducted line transects and opportunistic observations to determine the species richness of birds.
Our findings revealed a total of 35 species, with 20 of them being wetland species.
Of particular note were the nine species of migratory birds, including the scarce winter visitor, the Malayan Night Heron. This highlights the importance of Attaragoda wetland as a crucial destination for migratory birds.
